Tickets for public transport in advance
Whether you opt for single tickets, the Niedersachsen ticket for a day, or the €58 monthly subscription (cancelable at any time), the most cost-effective solution depends on several factors. If you're visiting Bremen by train (regional only, excluding IC and ICE) and wish to use buses & trams within the city, as well as potentially take trips to the surrounding countryside during a multi-day stay without a car, then the €58 ticket is an excellent choice.
Bus and Tram
While you can certainly get around Bremen by car, using public transport operated by BSAG (Bremen's public transport company) is more relaxing and environmentally friendly, especially for strolling through the city center. Buses and trams stop at key hubs like Domsheide, Brill, or the central station, from where a short walk will take you to Bremen’s classic attractions.

Current BSAG Vehicle Fleet
The BSAG network is well-developed. Getting from A to B during the day is no problem. However, it becomes more challenging at night when many lines are on break and neighborhoods can only be reached via limited-night services.

Historical trams occasionally run on special tours
On buses, fares must be paid directly to the driver (or conductor). Passengers aged 20+ must board at the front. On trams, you need to use the ticket machines. A more practical and cost-effective option is to purchase tickets in advance at the BSAG pavilion near the central station or at many newsstands and validate them upon boarding. Bicycle transport incurs an additional fee, except for folding bikes.
Since Bremen is part of the VBN network, temporarily installing the FahrPlaner app for Bremen/Niedersachsen can be helpful - it also allows you to book tickets on your smartphone.
Bremen is also served by FlixBus, a long-distance bus company. The stop is near the centrally located central station, from where you can easily reach almost any destination using BSAG buses and trams.
To explore the countryside (e.g., Worpswede), you can take buses in addition to trains from the main station.
Railway
The surrounding area of Bremen is relatively well connected by rail. Depending on the route and number of travelers, it may be cheaper to opt for a Niedersachsen ticket (state-wide ticket). As the name suggests, its validity is limited to Lower Saxony but includes the city-states of Bremen and Hamburg. The Niedersachsen ticket is not valid on IC or ICE trains. Unlike regional train tickets, the Niedersachsen ticket can conveniently be booked online and is also valid on BSAG buses and trams. It covers one day of travel and is only valid if all travelers' names are entered.
Bicycle
Bremen is a bike-friendly city. The infrastructure for cyclists is well-developed, though sometimes in less-than-perfect condition. Depending on the route and your physical fitness, you may even reach your destination faster by bike than with other modes of transport. There are many bike racks available in the city center for securing your bicycle. You can rent bikes at the central station from ADFC or WK-Bike locations throughout the city. For cyclists, it’s fortunate that it rarely rains in Bremen well, sometimes it does… and quite often too. That’s what we call Bremer Schietwetter (typical Bremen weather)
Car Rental
If you’re not traveling by your own car but still want one, the city offers several international and local rental agencies as well as numerous Cambio car-sharing stations, especially in the city center and adjacent neighborhoods.
Boat
The ships of Hal Över at Schlachte serve various destinations, including Vegesack, Bremerhaven, and Oldenburg. This requires some advance planning.

In 2022, Bremen updated and modernized its 96 info columns, primarily designed to help visitors navigate the city. These columns not only provide directions to attractions but also point out municipal institutions and public restrooms (which are equally important). Additionally, free Wi-Fi coverage was significantly expanded in 2022, now covering nearly all busy streets, paths, and squares in the city center. If you’d like to learn more about sights, dining, events, etc., while on the go, scan the QR code on the info columns with your smartphone for further content provided by the city.

In 2021, an observation platform was opened on the first decommissioned and superficially renatured part of the landfill in Blockland. The barrier-free designed Planetenweg (Planets Path) leads to a height of 40 meters. Planets? Yes, the Metalhenge - modeled after the famous Stonehenge - on the round observation platform is aligned according to selected astronomical aspects. Information about this can be accessed via QR code on your smartphone. Even for those not interested, the approximately 23 km wide view over Bremen on one side and Blockland on the other remains impressive.
