Übersee-Museum - African Sculptures - Bremen Travel Guide - Bremen sehenswert

African sculptures

Three years later, a presentation was created around the second atrium with an updated perspective on Africa. Also supported by multimedia elements, the exhibition spans from human evolution to today's daily life. Art and culture up to the present are as much themes as the exploitation of raw material sources on the "black continent." From the previous presentation, impressive dioramas featuring African wildlife such as lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and others remain in one corridor.

Death cult can also be like this: loud, as the America exhibition shows among other things

In 2016, the new America exhibition was finally opened on the upper floor as a quasi-final conclusion to the comprehensive renovation. After the original permanent America exhibition on the middle floor had been dismantled and replaced by the "Experience What Moves the World" exhibit opened in 2010, the museum now thematically engages again with the "New World" from north to south. The focus is current and incorporates history, such as traditions and contemporary life of the continent's indigenous peoples. Other themes include Mexico’s death cult, resource extraction, and the fauna and flora of the Amazon. The trade studies exhibition previously located on the upper floor was dismantled without replacement.

The presentation in Übermaxx is sober and functional, with an enormous number of displayed objects

Since the museum has far more exhibits in its collection than can be shown in the exhibitions, the Übermaxx showcase collection spanning multiple floors with an area of 2000 square meters was opened in 1999. It is accessible via the Waldemar-Koch glass and steel bridge from the first floor of the museum. The facilities are located in the same building as the Cinemaxx cinema, hence the name. Natural history objects such as plant and animal exhibits like snakes, frogs, fish, and butterflies are displayed, as well as cultural-historical objects like musical instruments, clothing, weapons, tools, and Buddha figures.

The "Übersee" gastronomy in the museum foyer caters to visitors' culinary needs. From there, depending on seating choice, you can also look into the lower exhibition rooms during the museum's closing hours.

Since April 2019, thanks to a financial contribution of 50,000 euros from the city of Bremen, free Wi-Fi has been available throughout the building for visitors, along with a new media guide that can be rented at the ticket office for a fee.

Bürgerpark

A green oasis near the city center and a heavily used recreational area is the Bürgerpark. The extensive park, which adjoins today's Bürgerweide behind the train station, was initiated by the citizens themselves. At the beginning of the 19th century, the old defensive structures of the city had already been dismantled, and the ramparts were transformed into a park landscape. However, as the city rapidly grew throughout the century, the demand for more green spaces became increasingly louder.

Freimarkt

What some might simply call a fair or a large amusement park is, for others, an event of equal importance to Christmas. However, the fact remains that for most residents of Bremen, the Freimarkt is considered the "fifth season" and an unshakable Bremen tradition. This isn't surprising, as Bremers can look back on nearly a thousand years of history for their festival - and with that, the Freimarkt is Germany's oldest folk festival.

Kunsthalle

The core of the Kunsthalle's collection consists of European painting from the Middle Ages to the present day. A particular focus is on French painting of the 19th and 20th centuries, which is primarily represented by one of the largest collections of Delacroix's works. German Impressionism is another key highlight, featuring works by artists such as Liebermann, Corinth, and Slevogt. The collection also includes painters from the renowned Worpswede artist colony near Bremen, such as Heinrich Vogeler and Otto Modersohn.
