These birds actually belong to regions with significantly different climatic conditions. Yet, over 30 parrots now live here in the greenhouses of a former nursery in the allotment area "In den Hufen" in the Findorff district. The colorful birds in the aviary come from private ownership, are survivors of illegal poaching, or have come from other situations that were not good for them. Almost all the birds arriving here are sick or distressed and must first be nursed back to health with expert care.

The dedicated staff's expertise is evident not only in the animal welfare awards received by the registered association in 2009 and 2006 from Bremen and Frankfurt, but also becomes clear during a guided tour of the facility on public days.

These public days, limited to a few dates per year, are far removed from an animal show like those in zoos. Instead, the association primarily aims to raise awareness and emphasize that large parrots are by no means suitable pets. Proper care requires companions of their own kind, space to fly, and nature. Additionally, they need facilities with high humidity for proper feather care and protection against parasites - conditions difficult to replicate on a small scale.

Participants in the guided group tours learn all this and more before being asked to remove brightly colored items like red bags or jackets before approaching the aviary's grid, as parrots perceive colors differently.

The enclosure is equipped with branches and foliage, and at regular intervals, an irrigation system activates to maintain the necessary humidity. These conditions mean that not all birds are always equally visible to visitors; one should not be disappointed if some animals are only heard.

As a registered association, the Parrot Protection Center operates as a non-profit institution. However, the financial costs of maintaining the facility, medical care for the animals, food, and paying non-volunteer staff are substantial. For this reason, visitors pay an entrance fee on public days, and the association requests monetary or in-kind donations both on-site and via its website to ensure ongoing operations and secure the animals' future in this protected zone.

Findorff district

The history of the Findorff district is closely tied to the moors of Lower Saxony's surrounding countryside. In 1819, the so-called "Torfkanal" (Peat Canal) was dug to transport peat as fuel, particularly from Teufelsmoor, by waterway to Bremen. Even today, the second peat harbor, built in 1873, exists in a smaller form within the district, with traditional peat barges still moored there. However, peat transportation no longer plays any role.

Bremerhaven - Zoo am Meer (Zoo by the Sea)

In addition to the 19th-century harbor facilities, the Zoo am Meer is the oldest attraction on the site between the Weser River and the pedestrian zone. It opened in 1928 under the name "Tiergrotten." The enclosures house polar bears, seals, penguins, various bird species such as gannets and keas, reptiles like turtles, raccoons, Arctic foxes, pumas, monkeys, and others - almost 50 animal species in total.
