The Canadian wolf with its white fur
When a guided group of children starts howling at a more distant enclosure, the larger white Canadian wolves respond, showing interest. They don’t immediately follow the announcement that they too will howl soon - our tour guide takes it in stride with humor. When we pass by again shortly afterward, the wolves are napping on an elevated spot in the farthest corner of their enclosure. Wolves are energy savers, yes, you can see it.
Wolves exist only in the Northern Hemisphere and come in 13 subspecies. The polar wolf is the largest, weighing up to 80 kilograms, and is also called the white wolf due to its fur. The further south a wolf’s habitat extends, the smaller the species becomes. For example, the Arabian wolf weighs only up to 20 kilograms. One could certainly consider the evolutionary history of wolves a success story. Equipped with an excellent sense of smell and hearing, as well as a 240° panoramic field of vision, wolves are particularly well adapted as team players in packs to various conditions.

The presentation in the upper exhibition room is an experience for all senses
The Wolf Center aims to foster understanding for these animals, which are actually part of our native fauna, through education. This is done here with great expertise. The wolf is the largest predator in the dog family, and if a pack can take down a fully grown moose, a human is a relatively small obstacle - especially since a gray wolf can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. However, humans are not part of the wolves’ prey scheme; conflicts mainly arise from competition for food, as livestock are an easy target if nothing else crosses the hunter’s path. Given the population density and extensive agricultural landscapes, encounters between humans and wolves will continue to happen.

It’s hard to imagine that any question could remain unanswered given this wealth of information
All of this - and much more - is also showcased in the richly informative, well-designed exhibits with interactive elements in both the upper and lower parts of the administration building. They also demonstrate how, over the past centuries, wolves have often come out on the losing end, while humans have far surpassed the apparent cruelty of the Isegrim (a German term for wolf) in their hunting practices. Bring time with you; there’s a lot to learn that you likely didn’t know before.

Black-tailed prairie dogs are rodents native to the North American prairies. They got their name from their barking-like warning calls
The Wolf Center’s grounds are designed to invite visitors, especially those with children, to stay for a while. There are play areas, goats to pet, seating spaces, and a restaurant. The black-tailed prairie dogs are also adorable. You can even spend the night in a twin-bed room outside or in a tipi, as well as in the treehouse hotel with a view of the wolves on the grounds.

Gar nicht so einfach

Fertig, doch geschafft

Und dann schnell noch ein erfrischendes Bad
The name Weltvogelpark sounds ambitious, but in fact, this park in the Lüneburg Heath is the largest of its kind in the world - and it has only carried the "World" addition since 2010. Over 4,000 birds, including many rare species, live on the 24-hectare grounds, representing around 650 different species from all continents. The bird park was founded in 1962 as a private breeding station and later expanded into a full-fledged park. It’s a highly recommended day trip for the whole family.
