Wismar - The Nikolaikirche has the fourth-tallest nave in Germany

The Nikolaikirche has the fourth-tallest nave in Germany

Well-preserved, thanks to renovation work, is also the Nikolaikirche, which impresses with the second-tallest nave of brick Gothic architecture - only that of Lübeck's Marienkirche is taller - and the fourth-tallest in Germany. Here, your gaze reaches 37 meters high. The sacred building, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, is considered a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture in Northern Europe and was constructed starting in 1370. Since 2002, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took builders around 100 years to complete this remarkable church located at „Frische Grube“ opposite the Schabbell.

Wismar - Altar retable - Nikolaikirche

Altar retable

Part of its furnishings, St. Nikolai owes to the damage or destruction of Wismar’s other two large churches. Thus, an altar retable comes from St. Georgen and a 1335 bronze font with a „devil’s grille“ from St. Marien.

Speaking of the devil, director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau filmed the silent classic "Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror", an adaptation of Dracula from 1922, at locations in Wismar, such as the courtyard of Heilig-Geist-Kirche, the market square, or the Wassertor (water gate). Plaques there commemorate the expressionist film. Well then, happy scavenger hunt!

But even beyond that, it’s worth wandering through the old town, as there is much more to discover, such as the Hanse Sektkellerei with its modern shop and „Old Vault.“

If you haven’t had enough of city tours after visiting Wismar, a stroll through the neighboring city and state capital Schwerin is recommended. Particularly noteworthy is the castle with its adjacent park.

Rügen by the Baltic Sea

Active holiday featuring cycling and hiking

Enjoy an active holiday featuring cycling and hiking along the Baltic coast in Mönchgut on the island of Rügen. Long sandy beaches, rolling hills, and lush forests provide a varied and beautiful setting for your getaway. Often, the only thing breaking the peace is the distant whistle of the historic 'Rasender Roland' steam train. Despite its name (which suggests something "racing" or fast), it’s actually quite the opposite. A journey by train is simply part of the holiday experience.

In the Probstei in late summer

Schönberger Strand and sea and more

Can you walk or ride a bike from Brasilien (Brazil) to Kalifornien (California) in just a few minutes, always with a view of the water? No, not with your finger on the globe or map, but in person. You’ll have to forgo Copacabana and the Sunset Strip with the Angels in Los Angeles (Spanish for "The Angels"). Instead, you get Germany’s "True North" with all its bright sides. Of course, there are sometimes shadows here too, but they belong only on the margins of this story.
